Rachel Smith and Lin Griesel took on the challenge of a lifetime when they set off from La Gomera, Canary Islands, on 2 December 2007 - reaching Antigua and winning the Women's pairs class 76 gruelling days later as part of the Woodvale Challenge Atlantic Rowing Race.

The race route took the two rowers 2,935 miles (2,552 nautical miles) across one of the world's largest oceans, from the Spanish island of La Gomera, to Antigua in the Caribbean.

It's a well established ocean rowing route and known as the Columbus route. It is generally agreed by those in the know that it's a good one to complete as your first ocean row! Official races started over this route in 1997 and have continued regularly since then.

How OverBoard Got OnBoard!

"A chance meeting at the Outdoors Show in 2007 led to OverBoard offering to support Lin and Rachel as they set out to row 3,000 miles, from the Canaries to the Caribbean, across the Atlantic Ocean in a 24 foot boat. Competing in the Atlantic Rowing Race to raise funds for Breast Cancer Care, the pair faced extreme temperatures, stark conditions onboard, 30 foot waves and force 8 winds, electrical problems, injuries, sleep deprivation, a variety of wildlife, and probably the biggest danger of all, other ships.

Even suffering a full capsize just 300 miles from the finish couldn't stop them though and after 76 days, 11 hours and 12 minutes at sea, they crossed the finish line and arrived in Antigua to a rapturous welcome.

Says Rachel 'rowing across the Atlantic is both the best and worst thing we've ever done, certainly the toughest, and it's not something to be undertaken lightly. It is only due to the support of sponsors such as OverBoard, and our own intense preparation, using the best kit available to us, that we were successful in crossing the Ocean.

Kit We Supplied

OverBoard supplied us with a selection of their dry tube bags and dry flat bags plus dry pouches and MP3 cases with headphones, all of which performed exceptionally well in such extreme conditions.

We used some of the tube bags on deck for the whole crossing and easily survived the unplanned capsize. We even kept a 6kg anchor and 10m of chain in one bag which coped well with being hauled around!

The flat bags were great for personal items and kept our clothes dry - ready for the magical day that we arrived in Antigua, while the dry pouches were ideal for storing things like batteries, video tapes and camera cards. The MP3 kits were a lifeline of sorts and provided total protection for our music players, whatever the weather.

We'd like to say a big thank you to Dan and Joel for supporting us and providing such fantastic products for us to use."

Lin and Rachel won the Women's Pairs class and have raised over £50,000 for Breast Cancer Care. If you'd like to find out more or read their onboard diaries, please visit - www.atlanticrowingchallenge.co.uk
